What a cool cat place! This campground was full of really tall trees. Oh, how I wanted to climb all the way to the top and chase those yummy looking squirrels. My human mommy said this was a 'No Kill Zone.' I could only watch them. We hiked around the campground. I saw a deer! Then we hiked down to the lake. We only stayed one night at Mancos State Park. I could have lived there for the rest of my cat years.

Sorry my feline friends. I know I haven't blogged in a long time. I was doing, you know, cat stuff. I practiced my rock climbing. I think, I'm getting pretty good at it. My human parents couldn't keep up with me. 4 legs are better than 2. We were in Prescott, AZ. The most exciting thing lately is our new RV site has a tree. If I wasn't attached to the lead, I know I could climb all the way to the top. They never let me. My human dad does let me run free in the dog park. Oh yeah, I leave my mark just to drive the barkers crazy. (insert evil meow here) Over Christmas, I met my human grandparents. They loved to pet me. It was my first time in a house. It was so big. I did like the shiny lights and ornaments on the tree. I was a good kitty. I only batted one. My human mommy gave the "You're going in the kennel" look. Denied again! My human parents keep talking about trees of stone. I sure would like to sink my mighty claws into one of them. Maybe they will take me to this Petrified Forest before we leave. My hunting skills are improving. I almost got a bird. It wasn't a clean kill and my dad was upset that I wounded it. It flopped away. Next time, I'll get one. I know, my parents don't like it. I'm a cat. It's what I do! Meow!
What are Alpacas? Are they food? I sure hope so! I’m kinda hungry. Meow! Finally, we parked at the Blue Mesa Alpaca Farm. I jumped out ready to explore. As Mommy and I walked toward the Alpacas, I realized that I would NOT be eating them. Bummer! They were very big and fluffy. They seemed very curious about me. I still haven’t gotten used to all the attention being the ultimate adventure cat. I just do what I do. Meeeoow! Then we walked over to the horses. I met a horse before so I knew they wouldn’t hurt me. I guess walking around their “paws” is not a good thing. I just wanted to see them better. In trouble! I met the farm cat. We sat and growled at each other. You know, doing the cat thing. My human daddy didn’t think I should do that, so I got in trouble again. It’s hard being a kitten. Just when I thought I’d never get to do anything fun. I got to walk off leash! What a blast! I think the alpacas were jealous because they kept watching me. ![]() I started to get curious about them, so I crept slowly toward their pen. It’s hard to be stealthy when my human mom is so big and walks loudly. Things I have to put up with. Meow! As I approached the fence, all of sudden a massive white dog appeared on the other side and barked at me. He was mad. Like does he really think I’m going to eat them or something. They are huge! I did my best scaredy cat and ran back to our home. Why do dogs always ruin all my fun? I’ve never done anything to them. I spent the rest of our time catching juicy grasshoppers and watching Stuart, the old boy, walk around. He’s not adventurous like me but he’s old. My mommy said that I need to be nice and respect my elders. For my next big adventure, Hot Air Balloons. Not sure what that means but I pretty sure it’s going to be pawesome!
I love exploring waterfalls. La Plata Canyon trail has a lot of them. There is nothing more fun than climbing on rocks and drinking some cool mountain water. Sometimes I forget that my human mommy can't go into all the small places that I can go. She was trying to keep up with me on the rocks but I am a fast little cat. MEOW! I love climbing on the Jeep as much as I love riding in it. I am learning how to rock climb at The Notch on Snowstorm Peak. We were so high up that I could see forever! People on top of the mountain wanted to hold me and take my picture. Well, they petted me a lot so it wasn't so bad. I am a sucker for a good chin scratch. Meow! This was my favorite spot. I love hiking in the woods. When the trail ended, I stalked a deer. Well, more like watched with kitty curiosity. She seemed to like eating grass. Okay, this was the scariest thing I have ever done. I held on to my human mommy so tight. Mommy said I had to wear a PFD for safety. I had no idea that the kayak we kept at the RV park actually went on water. On Water! We stayed close to shore and people kept waving at me. I guess, a cat in a kayak isn't something people don't see every day. Let's just say, I was so happy to be back on the beach rolling in the sand. This place was so awesome! My human mommy and daddy sat outside and sipped on some wine at the Wines of San Juan. I almost caught a hummingbird. Those little birds are fast. Then I explored this amazing stuff called straw. I had never climbed on straw before. I didn't want to stop playing on it. I hope I get to play on straw again. I have seen and done so much in my 18 months. I hope it never ends. I love going to new places. I just found out we are going to see alpacas. I have no idea what they are but I hope they like cats.
As Daddy drove through the mountains, I just shut my eyes! Mommy kept making strange squeaky noises. I think she was scared that we were so high up on a narrow winding road. Sometimes a kitty just doesn’t want to know. Stuart just crawled under the sofa and hid. At least I was trying to maintain some cool. I didn’t know where we were going. I can only understand a few human words. You know, the important ones like food, outside, bird, dog, home, etc. My mom has started calling me LiLi. Ugh! She has given me a “pet name.” I refuse to acknowledge this insult to my beautiful name, Lyra. After what seemed like 7 weeks in cat days, they let me out into this glorious field of grass. Even though my parents tethered me to that stake, I practiced my hunting skills on the rabbits that were taunting me with their fluffy tails and big ears just out of my reach. The visit to the Colorado grasslands aka Colorado River State Park was brief but I learned so much about rabbits. We were back on the road. They didn’t let me out for long time. Oh! but when my parents did, it was worth the wait. I jumped out of our house into red dirt! My favorite kind! Meooow!!! After a good dirt bath, I realized that I didn’t hear any dogs. What is this place?! Is this the place I dreamed about in all my months of life? Then I saw it! It was quick and slender. It was going to be my lunch! I stalked it. Be very still. Wait for it! It’s coming closer. Pounce! I missed. Oh, lizard you will be mine! Some day! This place was my heaven. I’m in the Jeep! Yay! I love riding in the Jeep. Daddy and Mommy took me down this trail and we splashed through water. There was so much to see that I had to hang out the window. I tried climbing out onto the mirror but Mommy caught me. “I just wanted to see better,” I protested. She wouldn’t let me. Stuart, the old boy, liked Utah, too. He usually eats and sleeps and never wants to play. I saw him chase a beetle and run! This was a magical place! I watched for what seemed like forever for my mommy to come home. Daddy said that she went to visit her family in New York. I don't know where that is but I know it isn't here. I missed her so much. Daddy works all day. I was all alone. Then finally late one night I saw her get out of the car. I ran to the door to greet her but I was met with a cat in carrier. He didn't seem to happy to see me. I was just as unhappy to see him. The last time I met a cat, it didn't go so well. I was so scared when mommy unzipped his carrier. As he slowly climbed out, I realized he was very old and just as scared as I was. He is definitely bigger than me. He began hissing at me. "Oh no!" I thought, "I'm in for it." He never raised a paw. He's all hiss and growls. Phew! For the next few day, I closely watched him. I kept trying to be his friend but he didn't want anything to do with me. My young life was turned upside down. Then one day when he was sleeping, I crept slowly toward his bed. He woke up and didn't hiss at me. We touched noses. It was turning point in our relationship. My parents gave him his very own leash. Now he can go outside with me. I love being outside especially since all the snow has melted. I can't wait to show him the river and all the ducks! Stuart and I aren't friends yet, but I won't stop trying.
Today, I saw my dinner. I love beef so much. My Daddy and Mommy took me on an adventure to see some pretty cool rocks. We drove down snowy muddy roads. Oh, how I wanted to get out and play. Then in the middle of the road were COWS! My heart was racing. I tried to walk up to one of them but I leaped into my Mommy's arms. Too BIG! I think from now on I will watch them from the Jeep. Finally, the Jeep stopped and I saw the purfect place to climb. Daddy said that we were at Arch Rock. I just wanted to climb to the top. I tried to get to it but the snow was deeper than me! I even tried hopping in Mommy's footsteps but I am still too little. We jumped back in the Jeep and started for home but all of sudden Mommy started to hold me really tight. We slid into a huge pile of snow! They tried to get us unstuck. Daddy took my litter box out of the back. I knew this wasn't going to be good for me. He put my litter under the tires. MY LITTER! I was thinking things could get messy in here. Thankfully, two oil field workers drove by and pulled us out. Daddy said from now on we are keeping all the gear in the Jeep. I don't know what that means but I'm hoping that means he won't use my litter again. When we got home, I was dirty, so I sat on my Daddy's clean clothes and bathed myself. Meow!
I bounced out of our home into cold wet white stuff, again. I remember it from the frozen lake I walked on. I'm so glad that I wear a fur coat. The snow was deep. I lead my parents closer to sounds of the birds and rushing water. I was thinking that this better not be another ocean. I was so happy to see it was just a river. The biggest birds with long necks started shouting and flying away. They were bigger than me! Where did they go? I tried to follow them but they landed in the water. I climbed out onto a branch in the river and took a drink. It was cold and tasted a little like fish. I'll have to have some more when we go back. This place had a lot of rocks and branches for me to play on. Mommy kept telling me it was time to go but I wasn't ready. Daddy picked me up and carried me back to the bridge so I could play on it. Mommy and Daddy said that we will be here for awhile. I really like New Mexico.
After doing what cats do best, I woke up to discover we were in the desert. Dad was driving so slow to our campsite in the middle of nowhere. I kept meowing and running on the dash to tell him to hurry up. I reached for the door meowing that I wanted out. Mommy said that we have to wait until daddy parked our home before I could get out. I crouched next to the door. It took forever, then finally Mommy put on my leash and I bounced out the door. Wow! What a place. Dirt everywhere. I rolled so much that my fur was the full of the dusty wondrous dirt. I led Mommy around our new place. I had to smell everything. What's this? A rock. What's this? a bush. I repeated until my mom hooked me to my lead. I think she got tired of watching me smell stuff. Humans don't smell stuff like cats. They are missing out. Then I saw my favorite place at every campground. The fire pit! If you haven't ever been in a camp fire pit, you need to try it. You are missing out on a good place to play. Plus, you can hide and see everything. I was just settling into my fire pit playground, when I saw it coming toward me. Barking and all jumpy! Another dog NOT on a leash. Friend or foe, I didn't know. All I know is dogs think we are their play things. Really! I jump out of my fire pit and make the biggest "Scardy Cat" and hiss loudly. It didn't listen when its parents were calling it. "Kelsey, come here!" And they say cats don't listen. As it approached I start kicking up dirt and rocks as a spun around. If it gets any closer, I was going to make sure I left a reminder on its chin. Before I could, it took off toward its parents. Yeah, I showed that dog who was boss. Don't mess with me! HA! Settling back into my fire pit scanning for more doges. I enjoyed the open space and quiet.
After awhile, it started to get really dark. It was the darkest that I have ever seen in all my months! I heard strange noises again. I kept a look out from the direction it was coming from but I couldn't see anything. My daddy started cooking some delicious smelling meat on the grill. If I don't beg, they usually give me some pieces. Then I saw it. It wasn't a dog. It was a little bigger than me. It had a grey bushy tail and pointy ears like me. It was getting closer. I looked at my daddy but he didn't see it in the bushes. So I did the only thing I could, I began to meow a lot. Daddy had to use a light to see it. Humans don't see well as well as cats which is unfortunate for them. I moved as far as could on my lead toward the creature in the bush. Finally, my dad called to my mom and said, "Honey, we have a fox in our campsite." She ran out of the house with the light that makes loud cracking noise. She made the cracking noise and the fox ran off. Then the strange noises got louder. The one became three and they were circling us. Mommy and daddy kicked rocks and shouted but they wouldn't leave. All of sudden we heard loud howling and a lot of noise. My mommy scooped me up and ran into our home. She said in a shaky voice, "Lyra, you can't be outside. The fox might hurt you. " I wiggled and meowed, "Mommy, I can protect you. Don't put me inside." She didn't listen. Trapped inside I did what I could. I patrolled from window to window until my parents were safely inside. I knew, they were really worried about me because they didn't even care that I left dirty paw prints all over the counters and furniture. What a night!! This morning we went for a walk. I tried to find the fox but I couldn't so I took a nap. It's hard work hunting fox. When I woke up, my parents were back with fire wood. I guess, I won't be playing in the fire pit anymore. Bummer! The sun is setting again and daddy is grilling fish. My favorite dinner. I secretly hope the fox come back tonight. They don't seem as dangerous as dogs. By the way, Mommy doesn't have good Mifi signal so the photos of me will have to wait until we stop in Sedona. Oh yeah, I'm 10 months old as of today. My birthday is Feb. 28th. My mommy made a mistake in my first blog. Hey! She's only human. Meow! |
